Though summer at Flathead Lake is known for its recreational opportunities, the options for winter activities really do rival those of the summertime. There are two downhill skiing areas in less than an hour's drive and multiple options for cross-country nearby. Snowshoeing is a wonderful way to explore some of the mountain trails we hike in the the summer months. Here are just a few of the options located near to you when you stay at The Islander Inn.

Downhill skiing:

Whitefish Mountain Resort: 50 minutes north in Whitefish, the ski mountain offers 3000 acres and 105 marked trails.

Blacktail Mountain: Directly across Flathead Lake is Blacktail Mountain, offering both downhill and x-country skiing. Surrounded by 1000 acres of National Forest, Blacktail has around 24 runs on 200 acres with a 1,400ft vertical drop.

Cross Country Skiing:

Bigfork Community Nordic TrailsBigfork Community Nordic Center (BCNC) is located on Montana State land at the corner of Foothills road & Jewel Basin Road. Blacktail Mountain Nordic Trails: Located 8 miles above Lakeside and at 5000’ of elevation, the 25 kilometers of varied terrain is groomed every day from December thru March.

Dog Sledding:

Base Camp Bigfork: The family owned business runs a year round operation of seasonal rentals but the really get to live their dream when the snow flies!
